Tim Sonntag: A Hidden Side Of Masculinity
Artist Tim Sonntag
Words Tom Czibolya
“Creative freedom is built on trust. The trust in myself, and the trust in the people I’m working with” – Berlin photographer Tim Sonntag’s images go beyond the animated as they explore the space between still life and portraiture. Tim’s pictures encourage the viewer to look beyond the object being photographed and discover new meanings through symbolism or free interpretation. His latest series, “Maennerbilder” represents his personal, emotional engagement with the concept of masculinity. “In my life, I’ve often felt caught between two stools. At some point, I realized that working in this in-between space was the most rewarding for me. I feel the same way about aesthetics or even social circles. I find different things beautiful, which may seem contradictory at first, but for me, it is the beauty in the contrasts in the interplay of the images. And I feel the same way about my friends, whom I love for being so different from each other.”
Tim’s imagery greatly relies on the role light – or the absence of it – plays in his art. It’s a fine line he’s walking, but thanks to his fine-tuning techniques and thirst for the new and unusual, his magic never fades. “Sometimes I see a shadow, and I think to myself – That’s it. That’s exciting. I need that. In the age of social media, when it’s easy to think that we’ve actually seen everything, there is nothing more fulfilling to me than discovering something new.” Tim is part of Container Love’s latest special, Spring Is My Love, our ongoing series celebrating a new season with beautiful, new artists to discover!
