For designer Buki Akomolafe sustainable fashion equals timelessness. Thanks to her upbringing in the nigerian countryside, her Berlin-based label has an unique understanding not only of next-generation design, but eco-friendly sourcing as well. Her collections – limited editions or not –  are like a breath of fresh air, making her one of our favorite new fashion designers.

We had a little chat with Buki about her brand, inspiration and changing the world.

What is a safe space for you?

I don’t think a particular ‚safe space‘ exists, I think there is only safer spaces which to me means, that I can feel comfortable in my skin, with my believe system and share same ideas, values and visions. In a safer space I can feel free, be truly myself and connect with like minded people.

What does Chosen Family mean for you?

Chosen family to me means having a community of like minded souls that I love and care about and vice versa. My chosen family makes me feel home, free and supported. My chosen family supports my identity and we lift each other up.

We all love inspiration. And we all could use a little splash of it right now. Where do you get your ideas? And in what ways does your creative process have an effect on your daily life?

I get my ideas from everywhere in my daily life, from traveling and my life between two contrasting worlds. I observe a lot, such as colours, textures, the way people dress, how people express themselves. My mind never rests, cause I’m inspired by almost everything… I think if you are living in the moment and enjoying it to the fullest, every second can be so inspiring.

Building a brand and creating new products is always part of the daily creative engine. What should never be missing in your creative process?

Despite being true to my values and never loose the focus on my vision, it is very important to me to have fun and joy during the creative process. I do everything with passion.

We love brands and products with a strong message behind them. What’s yours?

Conscious consumerism and decolonizing fashion.

We have heard that sending visions into the universe cannot be wrong. So let’s do it. Whats your vision? What will Buki Akomolafe look like in ten years?

My vision is that soon there will be a fair exchange and trade on eye to eye level between the global north and the global south.

How do you spread love with your product?

I create from my heart and I do care about the people and the environment in the supply chain. Everyone in the whole production process is important and should be treated with love and respect. I want people to feel good and love themselves while wearing my product. I want to spread joy with my colours and patterns

What would you really like to do? Right now? Instead of answering these little questions…

Watch a TED talk with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

How do you want to change the world? What are the first three topics that come to your mind spontaneously?

I want to change the world in being an example and taking responsibility in my actions and decisions. My first three topics are, decolonizing fashion, social justice, gender equality.
